Fairy House and Garden for Kids in Love with Fairies

Grandma Sandy is on vacation, returning Wednesday, August 14. In the meantime, each week, we’ll feature a curated collection of the best of “Call Me Grandma!” In today’s post, we’re highlighting some projects for kids in love with fairies.

As a child, I was enchanted by fairies. And I l suspect most kids today still are, too. So here are three fairy projects from the archives for a fairy house, fairy lamp, and fairy garden that you can craft with a child.

Miss T, always a pragmatist, probably never believed in fairies. But she could enjoy the idea of them and be charmed by their magic.

These fairy projects are great as standalone summertime activities but you could also use one or two for a fairy-themed party, where you gather the materials and have the children craft together. Serve some adorable fairy birthday party refreshments.

Make a Fairy House

Toilet roll fairy houses are made with felt or cardstock.

Miss T and I used toilet paper rolls to make these cute fairy houses. I show you two options: one is made from felt and the other is made from cardstock. You can put a battery tea light into the felt ones and watch them glow.

Make a Fairy Lantern

I made Miss T a fairy lantern because I couldn’t find a commercial one I liked. They’re simple to put together and you just finish with a string on battery-operated fairy lights to make magic.

For kids who aren’t interested in fairies, such as N, we made a variation of the lantern using Pound Puppies images.

Make a Fairy Garden

The idea for a fairy garden comes from Jen Strobel of Sloat Garden Center in the San Francisco Bay Area. Have kids decorate tera cotta pots and then plant a fairy garden. Give the child some requirements for their fairy, such as a rock to sun on and a place to hide when strangers come. Then let them use imagination to plan and create their fairy world.
